Stacked high

With the Meret Oppenheim high-rise in Basel, Switzerland, Herzog & de Meuron has created an impressive residential and commercial building situated in a central location, right next to the train station. The first six stories house businesses and restaurants as well as office space, most of which is used by the Basel studios of Swiss Television. The upper 25 floors contain apartments.

Signposting

The signage by unit-design features signs in the exterior areas in the form of pylons and illuminated advertising units. Signposting is an essential element to direct users and visitors to the entrances to commercial premises, Swiss Television and apartments.

Design parallels

The neighboring rail facilities inspired the materials and appearance of the signage elements: black steel with a rough surface and the projecting illuminated 3D-lettering invite parallels with the dark, rough track bed and the gleaming surfaces of the rails.
