A university and the urban environment

unit-design was invited to take part in a competition to design the visual identity and orientation system for the Science City development at ETH Zürich. The starting point for the project was the urban environment of the campus in relation to the academic facilities.

The design concept was based on a study of both aspects. The result was three different types of presentation: content mapping, mental mapping and facility mapping.

The concept for assigning names was a key part of the project and was intended to reflect the heterogeneity and diversity of names in historic cities.

Orientation concept

An extensive analysis of movement and structural features resulted in an orientation concept that combines the spatial aspect of the city signage with the content-based aspect of the communication system.
