An interface to citizens

unit-design created a new visual identity for the German city of Frankfurt am Main, establishing a basis for the design of signage at the various departments. Aspects such as relevance to citizens, transparency and intuitive legibility were just as important as representing the city at these interfaces for communication with city residents.

A color scheme reduced simply to white, black and red achieved the necessary clarity for the signs.

To help members of a diverse populace to find their way around – people of all ages, from a local or a migrant background – unit-design developed a system based heavily on the use of symbols. The custom-designed family of pictograms ensured that people could find the relevant information and locations quickly.
