Accentuating features

The Eurotheum office and hotel complex in Frankfurt, built in 1999, is being thoroughly renovated by Peter Kulka Architektur of Cologne. A spacious foyer now links the old and new sections of the building. unit-design has developed a complete orientation system comprising identification for the outside of the building as well as the foyer, the office floors and the underground parking garage.

One particular challenge has been designing the large, illuminated wall surfaces in the lobby. unit-design chose three-dimensional letters that appear to float in mid-air on the illuminated surfaces thanks to the materials used – a captivating dialog. The use of wood as a material helps to accentuate features and creates links between the installation of the doors and reception. An alternative design proposal envisages large-scale printing creating diffuse beams of light through the façade and integrated in the lighting design.
